Lal Bahadur Shastri
Sharing the birthday with the great veteran Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri has remained in our hearts forever. His slogan of ‘ Jai jawan jai kisan’ is inspirational even in today’s time and a high status of patriotism was instilled by him in the struggle for free India. He was very unassuming in his physical appearance but was self taught to be capable enough to become the third Prime Minister of our country.
He was instrumental in getting the glory of winning the war against Pakistan for India. He held several posts in Transport and communication before getting on to the post of being the Prime Minister of free India. Belonging to the Srivastava caste he dropped his surname as he realized that caste system was also a block in his road towards motivating Indians in getting their freedom and progressing towards development.
His honest and simple demands in life made him achieve the goal for India. Heeding the call of Mahatma Gandhi for the non cooperation movement, Lal Bahdadur. joined him at the keen age of 19. The title of ‘Shastri ‘was actually earned by him from the Kashi Vidya Peeth where he studied philosophy. His simplicity is again reinstated when he took some khadi and a charka as gift during his marriage to Lalita Devi.
