The birthday day of the great Philosopher Swami Vivekananda is celebrated as the National Youth Day in India. January 12th of every year is dedicated to Swami Vivekananda who strived hard towards nation building and whose teachings were a foremost motivation to many philosophers and national leaders. His philosophy and teaching has said to motivate many great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose and many more.
Swami Vivekananda always believed in the power and the dreams of the youth and he wanted every youth of the country to encourage and nourish the historical culture of the nation as well as bring about advancement in them according to the changing modernization. His philosophy was a mixture of both spirituality and science. He gave a rational thinking to many of his ideas and thoughts. Such thinking motivated the youth since they could relate and logically align themselves to his thoughts.
Keeping in view the motivational philosophy of Swami Vivekananda, the government of India decided in 1984 to observe this day as the Youth Day. One of the quotes of the government regarding the decision was, “It was felt that the philosophy of Swamiji and the ideals for which he lived and worked could be a great source of inspiration for the Indian Youth.”
This day is also celebrated in all the centers of the Ramkrishna Math which was founded by Swami Vivekananda. Meditation, worship, pooja, religious discourse is a part of this celebration.
Swami Vivekananda was a believer of Hinduism and communicated his philosophy through Vedanta philosophy.
His writings and lectures on science and spirituality, till date motivate and inspire youths in study circles, youth organizations etc.

At Ramkrishna Mission Ashrama, the day starts off with garlanding the statue of Swamiji. Students from various schools and colleges join in the occasion. Speeches are delivered on the occasion enlightening the youth to strive hard and in the right direction to achieve
success. Students too participate in the form of cultural dance and music programmes.
