Indian Air Force Day

The Indian Armed force consists of three segments namely the Indian Army, Navy and the Royal Indian Air Force.

October 8th every year is celebrated as the Indian Air force Day. The day is celebrated in air force bases all across the nation with air shows and parades conducted by air force cadets.

8th October 2009 was the 77th Anniversary of the Indian Air Force. The rehearsals start many days in advance. It is in honor when the Indian Air force was formally constituted on the 8th October 1932.

The Indian Air Force has been a fundamental part of the defense system of the nation along with the Indian Navy and Army. 1st April 1933 was the day when the IAF’s first flight was formed. The first time IAF came into action was during the Wazirstan against the tribal.

IAF later got expanded during the World War 2. IAF has proved to be a great defense force during the war especially in Burma. Its exorbitant contribution and achievement achieved the IAF the prefix of Royal in 1945 and hence came to be known as the Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF).

After the Second World War, the strength of the RIAF personnel’s increase to 28,500.

The IAF functions with the motto “Touching the Sky with Glory”.

Generally the day starts with air display of the Para Motor and performance of the Hang Glider. The aircrafts of IAF display air stunts on the occasion.

Not only the aircrafts but the Mi-17 Helicopters to display air stunts during the parade. This year the IAF also showcased the Airborne Early Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) which has been newly inducted. The air warriors also perform rifle drills during the occasion.

The Supreme Commander of the IAF is the National Commander of the air force.

Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee was the first Air Staff Chief and was a part of the team of founding members of the Air Force. In the last few years, Indian Air Force has been expanding immensely and has initiated the bringing up of women into the short service commissions.
