Good Friday and Easter mark the resurrection of Jesus Christ extolling the sacrifices he made for human kind. Christians and also other Indians celebrate this festival with equal zest. Santa Claus visiting us is a child like dream for all of us. The beauty of Christmas has a surreal feel to it. The birth of Jesus Christ on December 25th is remarkable and the stories in Bible are interesting for people of all religious. Going for the midnight mass, dressing in the finest suits and gowns is typical about Xmas. Carols and hymns along with prayers of gratitude bring about a holy feeling entirely in India.

The New Year eve is almost like a festival in India. Everywhere the spirit of Xmas still lingers and its party time with lot of acknowledgement in the form of gratitude to God. Rosh Hashanah is another Jewish festival marking the New year for our Jewish brothers. ‘Shana Tova’ is mentioned to wish New Year and the horn is blown as a ceremony.

Id is the festival of our Muslim brethren. The greeting is a warm embrace and all families and friends gather together to enjoy the festival. The sevaiyya and biryani are gastronomical delights that are mandatory during the festival. The wearing of new clothes, observing prayers and visiting relatives adds to the zest and exuberance. In Tamil Nadu the cow festival is done during the Pongal time which is the race event.

The bhaiiya dhuj festival of South India is known as Karthigai falling on Purnima of the Karthik month. Lamps are lit and the traditional appam-pori is the delicacy during this day. Visits to brother’s house and general family get together bring in joy. The boat festival at Kerala attracts thousands of tourists from around the world each year. The beautiful boats are adorned and skilled boatmen partake in the event with a lot of enthusiasm and zeal.

The Parsi New year or Navroz is marked by visits to the fire temple and prayers to the Ahura Mazda whom the Parsis revere. With many religions and cultures the festivals in each state is unique and has a distinct splendor during celebration.
