Raksha Bandhan

Delight is one word that sums up the look in the sisters eye as she eagerly awaits for her brother on the day of Raksha Bandhan. The holy thread cannot be measured by the quality or length. It is about a bond that is strong and long enough to stay for a lifetime. Children love to look forward for Rakhi in a special way. For them this is time for laughter, relatives and sweets along with gifts.

Nowadays there is no need to despair as technology has made it possible for us to connect with all our cousins and near family members. The spirit of the festival is felt all around the globe because we able to connect via technology. This is a time not only for a brother and sister to bond but also a relief for grandparents and the numerous relatives to witness the glow of the tilak on the brother’s forehead.

Always wishing for the best things, the sister also remembers the old days when they would share and nibble a chocolate or also chit chat about things that were silly. Sharing comics on lazy vacation holidays, wailing untimely for a lost toy, being in the company of the brother, the sister is now wishing for prosperity for the brother. Lavish lunches and sweets are a normal inclusion in all Indian homes.

Adorning oneself with the finest dresses and jewelry, Raksha Bandhan is celebrated in all metro cities too with equal fervor. The day also coincides with Nariyal purnima which is revered by the fishermen folk as the cast away a coconut offering in the sea to bring them good fortune. Amniavattam is a south Indian festival celebrated as the day to annually change the holy thread worn by the Brahmin community and a very religious connotation is attached to it.
