Dhurva : The Shining Star
There was once a king named Uttampal. He had married twice. One of his wives was his favorite while the other wasn’t. The son of his non favorite wife was Dhurva.
One day, Dhurva came to his father and questioned, “Dear father, will you please allow me to sit on your lap?” Looking at Dhurva asking his father so, the other son of Uttampal too asked him the same.
Uttampal allowed Dhurva to sit on his lap. Seeing this behavior of the king, Uttampal’s second wife got furious. She angrily grabbed Dhurva’s hands and pushed him away from the king. Tears started rolling down Dhurva’s eyes and sobbing he went to his mom. He told his mom about what ever had happened.
Dhurva’s mom felt sorry for this state of her son, as she knew she was not the favorite wife of Uttampal. The behavior of the king towards Dhurva was a result of her being non favorite for the king.
Innocent Dhurva asked the solution to change this behavior of the king towards the two of them. His mother told that only Lord Vishnu had the power to do so. She told him that his wishes would be granted only if he does intense meditation without food and water.
He went to the jungle and started meditating. Many years passed by but Dhurva was still meditating without a drop of water and a morsel of food. Finally, looking at his efforts to impress Lord Vishnu, finally the Lord blesses him with his darshan. Lord was so impressed that he asked Dhurva to wish anything he wanted. He asked the Lord to make his mother the favorite wife of Uttampal. Lord Vishnu granted him the wish. Dhurva went back home. People started welcoming him with great respect and love. King Uttampal himself welcomed Dhurva and accompanied him to his mother, who was now the favorite of the king.
Dhurva was later made the king. He served his people for many years and finally after his death went to the heaven and became a star. This was all a boon of Lord Vishnu.
